Shiba Inu, the canine-themed memecoin, eyes a new frontier: the “.shib” domain. It’s tailored to work seamlessly with mainstream internet tools, unlike “.crypto” and “.eth.” Aiming for user-friendly integration, it stands apart in the domain space.
In collaboration with D3, an internet domain specialist, Shiba Inu’s team has formally applied for approval of the “.shib” Top-Level Domain (TLD). They are actively pursuing the green light for this domain extension. D3 pioneers next-gen domains, bridging the gap between the traditional Web2 and the emerging Web3.
Announcing the partnership on December 19th, D3 highlighted the ambition to make “.shib” seamlessly integrate with everyday tools like web browsers and email. In contrast, current Web3 names, such as “.crypto” and “.eth,” struggle with these applications due to their non-DNS nature.

D3 emphasizes the current limitations in the domain landscape, where Web3 names operate independently, creating a disconnect. While Web2 domains are DNS-friendly, they lack essential harmony with Web3 tools. Recognizing these challenges, “.shib” emerges as a strategic solution, offering DNS compatibility and native integration with Web3 tools to enhance overall interoperability.
shib Domain and Name Tokens Await Approval
Pending approval, Shiba Inu (SHIB) holders might soon personalize their email addresses with a “.shib” suffix, playing nice with standard email apps. The application process involves seeking the green light from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is a key player in Internet identity regulation.
D3 doesn’t stop there—they plan to roll out “name tokens” for SHIB users, simplifying digital transactions across blockchains without the headache of long wallet addresses. Despite the significant announcement, SHIB’s market response has been minimal. According to CoinGecko, it experienced a slight drop of less than 1%.
In another development, Shiba Inu’s Shibarium network, boasting two blockchains, hit a milestone in September with 1 million users. Currently in “private” mode, the team aims to make it public soon, expanding access and functionality.
