CoinGecko, a crypto data and analytics platform, recently published a report on Ethereum Liquid Staking for 2023. This report offers insights into Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSDs) introduced after Ethereum’s Beacon chain launch in 2020.
Initially, ETH holders were required to stake a minimum of 32 ETH to become validators after the launch. However, to encourage participation from individuals with smaller holdings, LSDs were introduced.
According to a report by CoinGecko, the Shapella upgrade allowed for ETH withdrawals on April 12. This resulted in outflows from prominent market players like Coinbase and Rocket Pool.
On the other hand, Lido, a leading LSD provider, consistently experienced daily net inflows of +18K ETH and saw withdrawals as high as 400K ETH. Nansen data shows Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken staked the most ETH within two weeks after the upgrade: 2.3M, 852,512, and 799,200, respectively.
Additionally, the report has emphasized that the ETH network implements a “churn limit” to regulate the admission and departure of validators. In August, 2,475 validators joined daily, creating a queue of up to 96,508 validators by June 10. During its peak, validators faced a 45-day waiting period before starting staking, a significant challenge.

The current wait time to activate an $ETH validator is a whopping 44 days! 🤯
Let's dive into the data to show how we got here and why I predict the massive queue will vanish by the end of summer. 📉

LSD Yield Trends & TVL Growth in 2023
CoinGecko has also disclosed that the top 8 Ethereum LSDs have generated an average annual yield of 4.4% since January 2022. Furthermore, several events occurring in subsequent months led to significant spikes in yields.
In 2022-2023, Ethereum Merge, FTX collapse, USDC de-pegging, and Shapella Upgrade boosted investment returns significantly. Notably, the highest recorded yield peaked at 18.2% during November 2022.
The report provides a comprehensive ranking based on these findings:
Frax’s sfrxETH outperformed LSD protocols with a strong 6.2% yield from October 2022 to August 2023. Lido’s stETH and StakeWise’s SETH2 lead with gains of 4.6% and 4.5%, while other LSD protocols yield 3.9% to 4.2%. Anker’s ankrETH stands out with a 3.5% yield, an exception in the otherwise higher-yielding LSD protocols.
The report concluded that within LSD Finance protocols, the TVL experienced a tremendous growth of 5,870% since January. By the end of August 2023, it reached an impressive total of 919.0 million dollars. Lybra, leading the sector, accounted for 39.1% of TVL ($359.0 million) by August’s end, distinguishing itself.
